About the role
Join the Enteric Virus Reference Laboratory at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), part of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.
In this role, you will support diagnostic testing and surveillance of enteric viruses of public health significance, contributing to work that informs public health responses across Victoria, Australia and internationally.
Working within a collaborative, specialist laboratory, you will undertake virus culture and molecular testing while supporting the day-to-day operations of the laboratory.
This includes maintaining laboratory stores, consumables, databases and inventories, as well as monitoring quality systems to ensure compliance with NATA, OGTR and DAFF requirements. As part of a World Health Organization-accredited Polio Regional Reference Laboratory, you will contribute to high-quality diagnostic and reference services that have a meaningful public health impact.
Key Accountabilities
Perform diagnostic testing of clinical and environmental specimens for enteric viruses of public health significance.
Characterise enteric viruses using virus culture, RT-PCR/RT-qPCR and DNA sequencing techniques.
Maintain laboratory databases, equipment, reagents and inventory to support daily operations.
Ensure compliance with quality systems, biosafety requirements and relevant regulatory standards.
Contribute to public health surveillance through accurate testing and reporting.
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality reference laboratory services.
About You
Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Honours), Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent
Excellent organisational and time management skills and ability to prioritise tasks
Self-motivated and prepared to work independently and as part of a team
Laboratory experience, preferably in virus culture and molecular biology
Experience working in a regulatory environment such as compliance with NATA accreditation (Desirable)
