About the Role:
The Microbiology department is seeking a Grade 1 Medical Scientist(s) to join our dedicated bacteriology and serology team.
We have two part time positions (0.5FTE each, one ongoing, one fixed term until 02.12.2026) which can be considered together or separate.
Your role will be to participate in the day to day operation of the laboratory. The Grade 1 scientist in Microbiology is responsible for performing routine diagnostic microbiological testing within any of the microbiology laboratories including Bacteriology, Microbial Serology and Molecular Microbiology.
The Bacteriology Laboratory currently operates 0700-2400 seven days a week. The successful applicant will participate in rotating rosters covering all shifts including public holidays and on call.
Internally, this position will be referred to and known as: Medical Scientist - Microbiology (Grade 1)
Classification for this position will range from Grade 1 Year 1- Grade 1 Year 7 (RX1-RX7) ($63,674 to $91,785.20 per annum, pro-rata for part-time, plus Superannuation).
What You'll Achieve:
- Perform accurate pathology testing supporting safe and timely patient diagnosis and management
- Attend, participate in and successfully complete training provided by the department and the hospital
- Contribue to quality, safety and continuous improvement initiatives
- Work in a collaborative team environment with respect for other members of the team to achieve service goals
Your Skills and Experience:
- Hold a Bachelor Degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification. Major in Microbiology is desirable
- Qualify for professional scientist membership of Australian Institute of Medical Scientists or the Australian Society for Microbiology
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory is highly regarded and in particular in paediatric and or obstetrics/gynecology
- Ability to multitask and sucessfully work as part of a team
- Customer focussed approach with well developed interpersonal and communication skills
- Be available and demonstrate flexibility to participate in rotating rosters including on call duty

Victorian Department of Health has endorsed the initiative to restructure existing public pathology by bringing together laboratories into pathology networks operating under a lead health service.
Pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a single pathology service. This creates an exciting opportunity to strengthen the scope, scale and reach of pathology services across the Parkville precinct to benefit all Victorians.
This role will be part of the new centre of excellence that will be led by Melbourne Health.
