About the role
The Place Activation Coordinator sits within the Place Activation team and offers an exciting opportunity to help revitalise Melbourne’s streets and public spaces through creative, people-focused place activation.
This is a hands-on, design-focused role that applies placemaking, urban design and spatial thinking to transform public space — from early concept development through to detailed design, delivery and evaluation. The role plays a key part in supporting the City of Melbourne’s strategic objectives under the Council Plan, Melbourne 2050 Vision and Creative Melbourne priorities.
Working closely with the Place Activation Lead and cross-functional teams, you’ll contribute to the strategy, design and delivery of place activation initiatives, producing visual communications and technical outputs that bring ideas to life and support high-quality public realm outcomes.
A little more about the role
- Develop the strategy and design of place activation initiatives, applying placemaking processes, urban design and public-space design principles
- Produce design-led project outputs including scaled site analysis, spatial concepts, place plans, masterplans, sketches and technical documentation
- Develop visual and presentation materials using Adobe Creative Suite to communicate design intent to internal and external stakeholders
- Manage projects end-to-end, balancing creative design development with delivery, budgets, stakeholder engagement and evaluation
Why join Team Melbourne?
Located on the traditional lands of the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation, Melbourne is globally recognised as one of the most liveable, diverse, and dynamic cities.
At the heart of it all is the City of Melbourne – a passionate, purpose-driven organisation where your work truly matters. As part of Team Melbourne, you’ll help deliver what’s most important to the people who live, work, study, visit and invest in our great city.
We’re proud champions of diversity, committed to continuous improvement, and driven by a shared vision for a vibrant and sustainable future.
This is more than just a role – it’s your chance to make a real impact, contribute to something bigger, and shape Melbourne’s future alongside a collaborative and forward-thinking team.
About you
- Experienced in placemaking, place activation, or urban design
- Confident managing multiple projects in fast-paced, evolving environments
- Skilled in stakeholder engagement, negotiation and resolving competing priorities
What your experience might look like
- Demonstrated experience in place activation, placemaking or urban design, with a minimum of 3 years professional experience delivering projects in this space
- Demonstrated ability to develop high-quality project documentation, site analysis and presentations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including engagement with diverse stakeholders
- Experience interpreting and applying relevant policies, regulations and procedures
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, with experience producing visual and technical materials
Benefits of working with us
- Attractive remuneration & benefits: Excellent pay package with a range of exciting benefits. Flexible working, study assistance & other great corporate discounts.
- Excellent leave entitlements: Enjoy up to 20 weeks of fully paid parental leave for primary carers, in addition to the government-funded parental leave, with no waiting period to access. Part-time equivalents are also available for added flexibility.
- Career progression: Career development support and opportunities to learn new skills within a creative and exciting environment.
- Work-life balance and hybrid working: We support flexible hours, alternative work arrangements (like ADOs), and hybrid work-from-home options.
