About the team
The Royal Women’s Hospital is one of Australia’s oldest and most distinguished tertiary hospitals dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of women and newborns, offering specialised services within maternity, neonatal and women’s health. Our goal is to be the best place to work, learn and contribute, and to provide exceptional experiences for our patients and consumers.
The Women’s Mental Health Service (WMHS) at the Royal Women’s Hospital offers a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment dedicated to the provision of specialised mental health care for women. The service includes two full-time Psychiatry Registrars, consultant psychiatrists, consultation-liaison clinicians, and clinical psychologists.
WMHS delivers a comprehensive consultation-liaison psychiatry service across the hospital, alongside specialised outpatient perinatal and gynaecology mental health services, including a dedicated Women and Drugs Service (WADS) supporting women with addiction in pregnancy.
The service is strongly committed to education and professional development, providing structured teaching, supervision, and mentoring for Stage 3 psychiatry registrars. This includes opportunities to develop expertise in consultation-liaison psychiatry, perinatal psychiatry, women’s mental health, and psychotherapy within a supportive and collaborative clinical setting.
About the role
The Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist delivers a high-quality, responsive psychiatry service at RWH, providing specialist assessment and management for women with mental health concerns in inpatient and outpatient settings, within a multidisciplinary care model.
A regular day will see you:
Provide a consultation-liaison perinatal psychiatry service to women receiving inpatient and outpatient care at RWH, including assessment and management of antenatal and postnatal patients, gynaecology and oncology patients, and involvement with NICU families.
Work collaboratively with clinical teams across RWH, providing advice, consultation, and support in the care of women with mental health needs.
Contribute to teaching in women’s mental health for undergraduate students.
Participate in the delivery of education and training for medical, midwifery, and nursing staff within maternity and gynaecology services.
Contribute to service development and quality improvement activities within the Women’s Mental Health Service.
About you
We are seeking a Consultation-Liaison/Perinatal Psychiatrist who is able to work autonomously while recognising when to escalate clinical issues to the broader team or head of unit. The role requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively de-escalate distressed patients and support multidisciplinary teams in managing complex and challenging clinical situations, including addressing staff anxiety.
You will bring with you:
- Registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists OR equivalent postgraduate specialist qualification OR eligibility for fellowship (e.g. near completion of training).
- Demonstrated experience in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Women’s Mental Health.
- Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Experience in developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with consumers and carers.
- Knowledge of evidence-based guidelines relevant to perinatal and women’s mental health service delivery.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview. If you have any queries about the position at RWH – please email the Medical Workforce Unit medical.recruitment@thewomens.org.au
The Classification and Salary scale will be dependent on experience, and you will be appointed and in accordance to the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) Medical Specialists Agreement 2022-2025.
