About Us
As Tasmania’s publicly owned training provider, TasTAFE is a vital contributor to the prosperity of the state’s economy through supporting jobs and employment and the economic resilience of our businesses and industry. With a focus on practical, real-life learning, we work hard to ensure the training our learners receive is industry relevant and we provide real industry skills that are highly valued by employers.
TasTAFE aspires to be a place of innovation, creating new ways of training, finding solutions, delivering differently and increasing access for all.
The Role
As a Student Counsellor you will play a vital role in supporting prospective and current students to achieve their educational and vocational goals. You will provide high-quality personal, career and crisis counselling services that minimise the impact of psychological, emotional or social factors on learning outcomes.
Working within a supportive and experienced team but with a high degree of autonomy, you will partner closely with teachers and student support teams to advocate for student wellbeing, resolve conflict and enhance positive learning experiences. You will also contribute insights on emerging student issues and trends to inform service improvement across the organisation.
This position is a part-time fixed-term contract until December 2026, offering 58.8 hours per fortnight, equivalent to three days per week, which will be negotiated.
What you will bring
- Proven capability in counselling, career guidance, mediation and student advocacy
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a sensitive and professional approach
- Demonstrated experience supporting individuals experiencing psychological or emotional distress
- Sound judgement, resilience and the ability to manage competing priorities impartially
- Well-developed skills in problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- A degree or higher in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work or similar.
- Minimum two years of recent, relevant counselling experience, including personal, vocational, and/or educational counselling.
A current Working with Vulnerable People registration is required, or the ability to obtain prior to commencement.
Supporting a Diverse Workforce
At TasTAFE, we encourage applications from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, people living with a disability, people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, mature age workers and members of the LGBTIQA+ community.
We are a diverse and inclusive workplace and understand the importance of flexibility. We want our workforce to reflect the diversity in our community, and we are committed to building a culture we are all proud of.
