Edith Cowan University
Are you ready to belong to a dynamic community where courage, creativity, and optimism are essential elements of our DNA? At ECU we’re inspired by the incredible achievements of Edith Cowan, the first woman elected to an Australian parliament and a lifelong champion of education. Empowered by her legacy, we’re united in our vision to lead the sector in educational experience and expand our impact through world-class research.
Embrace an opportunity to become part of something extraordinary.
The School of Medical and Health Sciences
The School of Medical and Health Sciences is home to teaching and research in Medical and Biomedical Sciences, Allied Health, and Exercise and Sports Sciences, as well as in Public, Occupational and Environmental Health. Our world-class research is rapidly translated to provide solutions to some of the key health issues facing our community.
About the Opportunity
Our Food Environments Team is seeking a motivated and skilled GIS Developer with experience using Python, ArcGIS Arcade and ArcGIS Online to join our NHMRC-funded Australian Food Atlas (AFA) project.
This innovative project will be the first in Australia to comprehensively map, measure, and monitor food access across jurisdictions, creating a national Food Atlas that visualises food access across the country. Designed for professionals in food policy, public health, and planning, the AFA will spatially represent communities’ ability to access food, identifying areas with limited access to healthy food and/or an overabundance of unhealthy options. This evidence base will inform food and nutrition policy, support planning decisions, and guide future policy to create equitable, health-promoting communities that enable healthy eating.
As a GIS Developer, you will work closely with the Senior Geospatial Product Developer to support the spatial analysis, data management, and visualisation tasks of the AFA project. You will assist in preparing, cleaning, analysing, and mapping spatial datasets, as well as maintaining and updating geospatial databases and online maps. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
About you
You are a GIS developer with a proactive, can-do mindset and a strong ability to work independently. You hold qualifications in GIS, spatial science, geography, or a related field and have a genuine interest in applying spatial analysis to public health and food environments. You have foundational experience using Python and ArcGIS Online for data management, analysis, and mapping, and are comfortable working with spatial data formats and automating GIS workflows. Exposure to other programming languages such as JavaScript is an advantage. You’re detail-oriented, analytical, and eager to learn, with good communication skills and a collaborative approach to supporting the Senior Geospatial Product Developer in developing and maintaining the Australian Food Atlas.
