  • Diverse PGY2 rotations with structured training and strong clinical supervision
  • Supportive, collaborative team environment with excellent teaching opportunities
  • Coastal lifestyle in Geelong with great work–life balance and access to Victoria’s best beaches and regions

About the role

The PGY2 HMO role offers diverse training through rotations across multiple units and is accredited under the National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training. Upon successful completion, trainees will receive a PGY2 Certificate of Completion.

You’ll rotate through various clinical units, gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic regional setting, with strong support and supervision from both junior and senior medical staff.
The PGY2 Stream provides tailored training opportunities for those pursuing careers in Surgery, Medicine, General Practice, or Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Rotations include Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Practice (new in 2027), Medical Specialties (Gen Med, Cardiology, Respiratory), Geriatrics, Rehabilitation, Palliative Care, Hospital in the Home, Psychiatry (Community or Inpatient), Surgery (General, Vascular, Orthopaedics, ENT), and ICU at St John of God Private Hospital.

Term planners align with the National Framework, including three preferenced terms and one cover term with a 5-week annual leave block. The role also requires participation in after-hours, on-call, and recall duties.

Located next to Deakin University Clinical School, you’ll have opportunities to supervise and teach students both in the ward and classroom. The Medical Education Special Interest group offers the “Near Peer Teaching Program,” along with Teaching on The Run courses and simulation teaching mentorship.

If you have the qualifications, interpersonal skills, and commitment to improving patient care, this role may be for you!

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality patient care across a range of clinical rotations (e.g. Emergency, Medicine, Surgery, O&G, Psychiatry, ICU).
  • Participate in rostered duties including after-hours, on-call, and recall shifts.
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams under appropriate supervision.
  • Engage in ongoing training, education, and professional development aligned with the National Prevocational Medical Training Framework.
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and ensure effective handover of patient care.

What we’re looking for

  • Eligibility for PGY2 (HMO2) training with commitment to completing the program requirements.
  • Strong clinical skills with a patient-centred approach to care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective teamwork.
  • Ability to adapt to diverse clinical environments and manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Professionalism, reliability, and commitment to Barwon Health’s values (Respect, Compassion, Commitment, Accountability, Innovation).
