Primary objective
The major purpose of the position is to provide technical services in the Pathology section of the Berrimah Veterinary
Laboratory (BVL) to support diagnostic, regulatory and research projects in livestock health and production.

Context statement
The core function of the BVL is to conduct veterinary laboratory testing on production animals, including aquaculture
species, for diagnostic surveillance, monitoring, regulatory, research, export certification and exotic disease exclusion
purposes. The BVL is National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited and holds certified containment
facilities.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Perform all technical duties relevant to the post-mortem room and histology laboratory, including production of high

quality histology slides, while maintaining appropriate biosecurity, occupational health and safety and NATA procedures.
2. Conduct routine clinical pathology testing, including haematology, clinical chemistry, serology, parasitology, and assist

with specimen reception and perform testing in other laboratory disciplines as required.
3. Assist in general laboratory work including specialised cleaning and reagent preparation, clean and sterilise laboratory

glassware, equipment and clothing.
4. Enter sample submission data and results into the Laboratory Information Management System.
5. Participate in NATA internal auditing activities.
6. Support emergency disease and pest animal and plant responses in the Northern Territory.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Experience with common pathology laboratory technical procedures, including histology, and ability to verify and

troubleshoot simple diagnostic tests.
2. Experience in a quality assured laboratory environment.
3. Ability to work with or without supervision and manage work priorities to ensure that outcomes are achieved in a timely

and professional manner.
4. Ability to use a range of standard desktop software and computer applications used for data handling.
5. Sound written and oral communication skills, together with interpersonal skills to effectively work in a team.

Desirable
1. A recognised qualification in medical laboratory or biological science.
2. Experience in technical assistance with research programs.
