Mechanical Apprenticeship (Fitter) - Osborne

At BAE Systems Australia

BAE Systems Australia is leading the largest ever surface ship project in Australia's defence history - the design and build of Hunter class frigates.

Recognised for delivering projects of global and national significance that help keep Australia safe, it is our shared passion that shapes our culture, and our people that make it a great place to work.

About the OPPORTUNITY

We have new opportunities for Mechanical (Fitter) Apprentices to join our Hunter Class Frigate Program - Test and Commissioning Team based at the Osborne Naval Shipyard - one of the most digitally advanced naval shipyards in the world.

We are now accepting applications for our 2027 apprenticeship program, commencing in February. It's an exciting time to join us and a great place to start a career in shipbuilding.

As a Mechanical (Fitter) Apprentice you will gain practical experience while in the shipyard, while completing a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Fitting Trade.

This is a challenging and exciting opportunity which will develop your skills to become an extremely versatile Mechanical Fitting tradesperson. Working in a state-of-the-art workshop or on the ship with a great team, your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the latest mechanical machinery and technology available in the defence industry
  • Assist with removing, repairing and installing mechanical components and equipment
  • Participate in preventative and corrective maintenance tasks
  • Use workshop machines to produce components
  • Applying health and safety processes in the workplace
  • Contributing to improving business culture with regards to people, process and systems

About YOU

As an ideal applicant for this opportunity, you will have:

  • An understanding about what a Mechanical Fitters role entails
  • An ability to work individually and collaborate with others as a part of a team
  • Effective communication, both written and verbal
  • Behaviours that demonstrate integrity, respect, and honesty
  • A positive outlook and enthusiasm to grow and develop in your chosen field
  • Initiative to problem solve and proactively engage in the tasks of your role
  • A demonstrated interest and understanding of becoming an apprentice in a highly sought-after trade

We believe in hiring for potential, we know that some candidates hesitate if they don't tick all the boxes. If this role interests you, but you don't meet all the criteria, we still encourage you to apply.

You will be joining a workplace that truly cares about your wellbeing.
