The Repatriation Medical Authority (RMA) is an independent statutory authority responsible to and appointed by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs. The RMA is part of the Veterans’ Affairs portfolio. The membership of the RMA comprises of a Chairperson and four other Members who are all eminent medical or scientific experts. The primary role of the RMA is to determine Statements of Principles (SOPs), which are legal instruments based on sound medical scientific evidence state what factors must exist to establish a causal connection between particular diseases, injuries or death and service.
The successful candidate will be a registered medical practitioner with demonstrated expertise in epidemiology or public health, including the ability to critically appraise and synthesise complex medical literature. They will have a strong understanding of disease aetiology, particularly in relation to environmental or occupational exposures, and experience translating technical evidence into clear, defensible conclusions for decision-makers.
Desirable qualifications include Fellowship of the College of Public Health or Fellowship of the College of Occupational Medicine as well as post-graduate qualifications in epidemiology and/or biostatistics such as a Masters in Epidemiology.
They will bring proven leadership capability, including experience managing or mentoring research staff, alongside highly developed written and verbal communication skills. An understanding of military health issues, as well as familiarity with medico-legal or regulatory decision-making environments, will be highly regarded.
This role offers a rare opportunity to apply rigorous scientific and epidemiological expertise in a statutory decision-making context, contributing to outcomes that directly impact the health, wellbeing, and recognition of Australia’s veteran community. You will work in a collaborative, collegial environment at the intersection of medicine, science, and law, appraising the latest medical and scientific research that informs nationally significant policy and compensation frameworks.
DUTIES
As an MO4 you will be required to:
- Prepare briefing papers in relation to more complex investigations notified by the RMA including liaising with the designated Member of the RMA.
- Co-ordinate the work of the medical research officers within the Secretariat, by formulating and establishing standards and procedures for the conduct of investigation and review of the specific aetiology of disease issues as requested by the members of the RMA.
- Utilise knowledge of epidemiology and statistics to prepare and review Statement of Principles submissions and develop the medical component of the Statement of Principles for consideration by the RMA.
- Assist in the development of a process for the ongoing review of Statement of Principles instruments to ensure that they remain current and reflect available sound medical and scientific evidence.
- Undertake the more complex tasks as directed by the RMA.
- Applicants should hold current Registration as a Medical Practitioner under the laws of an Australian State or Territory.
- Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
- All applicants external to DVA offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
- The successful candidate will be required obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance.
