We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our goal to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.
About Clinical Toxicology Department
Austin Health is a major training service for doctors at all stages in their career. Clinical toxicology is a specialised area of practice relevant to Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care (Critical Care) Medicine, and General Medicine. The Clinical Toxicology service is integrated within the Victorian Poisons Centre and Austin Emergency Department. The service provides medical care for poisoned patients at Austin Health and has admitting rights to the Emergency Department short stay ward, general wards, and the Intensive Care Unit. The Victorian Poisons Centre manages over 45,000 enquires per year, many relating to episodes of poisoning requiring inpatient care. The centre provides remote medical consultative services to over 2500 cases per year.
About the role
Join the Victorian Poisons Centre and become part of a small, highly skilled team of medical practitioners and pharmacists dedicated to the assessment and management of poisoned patients across Victoria. This unique role provides supervised clinical experience in the evaluation and treatment of acutely poisoned patients, both at the bedside and through TeleHealth consultations, offering exposure to a diverse and challenging caseload.
You will have opportunities to contribute to research, clinical audit, guideline development, and public health initiatives aimed at preventing and reducing the impact of poisoning. The Centre fosters a strong culture of learning and professional development, with weekly educational activities including case discussions, journal clubs, and guideline reviews. The Victorian Poisons Centre works closely with key health and government partners, including the Department of Health's Mental Health and Wellbeing Division, Ambulance Victoria, the Royal Children's Hospital, and the Royal Botanic Gardens mycology service. This position is accredited for six months of ACEM Special Skills training, including TS4-level accreditation.
A regular day will see you:
- Assess and manage acutely poisoned patients in the Austin Emergency Department.
- Manage patients in the ward and ICU environments who have been admitted under the care of the Clinical Toxicology Service.
- Support the Victorian Poisons Centre by managing remote consultations and following up ongoing cases.
- Participate in clinical case reviews, journal club, research activities and guideline writing.
- Contribute to quarterly state case review and M+M meetings.
About you
To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:
- A commitment to high quality patient care
- Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills
- An ability to communicate at all levels
- Current registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Minimum two-year post-graduate medical experience.
