Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician Grade 1 – Anatomical Pathology
Location: Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne (On-Site)
Employment Type: Casual (until April 2027) - up to 40 Hours per Week, working shifts between the hours of 5am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Laboratory Technician to join our Anatomical Pathology team. This role plays a pivotal part in preparing human tissue samples for histological diagnosis, contributing directly to high-quality cancer care.

As part of our dedicated pathology team, you will gain experience across a wide range of techniques, including:

• Embedding, microtomy, and handout
• Assisting in the Cut-Up Room
• Molecular pathology
• Frozen section preparation
• Cytology preparation
• Special staining techniques

Position Summary

The Grade 1 Medical Laboratory Technician in Anatomical Pathology will play a key role in preparing human tissue samples for histological diagnosis, performing a wide range of histological techniques including embedding, microtomy, handout, molecular, frozen sections and special stains. The role demands a understanding of both practical and theoretical knowledge in anatomical pathology, combined with a strong commitment to quality and safety standards, ensuring compliance with ISO15189, NPACC guidelines, and the pathology quality management system.

Selection Criteria

Qualifications & Experience:
Certificate or Associate Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory), a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Laboratory Technology or Laboratory Operations or equivalent in Anatomical Pathology.
Experience in anatomical pathology techniques, including (but not limited to) embedding, microtomy, special stains, cytology prep, cut up assisting.
Knowledge and application of ISO15189 standards, NPACC guidelines, quality management, quality control and RCPA quality assurance programs.
Compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and document all laboratory processes, results, and activities in accordance with accreditation requirements.
Participate in internal audits and inspections to maintain laboratory certification.
Act as a role model in laboratory best practices, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
Demonstrated continuing professional development (CPD) and ongoing commitment to keeping up to date with advances in anatomical pathology.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with staff, clinicians, and researchers.
Excellent organisational and time management abilities, able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines under pressure.
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and ensuring professional, patient-centred care.

Desirable:
