Please see the APSC’s APS Employee Value Proposition for more information on the benefits and value of employment within the APS.
About the team
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government’s national measurement authority. We play an important role in the Australian economy. NMI does this by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services. Our national measurement standards are internationally recognised.
We value the different skills, knowledge and perspectives our employees bring. NMI provides all employees with learning and development opportunities. We work to give everyone an equal opportunity to contribute and progress. NMI is committed to our values.
The Chemical and Biological Metrology branch provides measurement standards including pure chemicals, matrix mixtures and DNA standards. The branch also co-ordinates proficiency testing programs to assist laboratories assessing their ongoing performance. The branch houses three of Australia’s national testing laboratories, for forensic drugs, ultra-trace pollutants and anti-doping in sport. The branch delivers services across multiple sectors, including food, health and environment, carrying out research and development to enhance our capabilities in line with national and international requirements.
The Bioanalysis Section provides technical support and genetic reference materials within Australia and internationally. The industries we engage with include biotech instrument and test kit manufacturers, food and feed producers, biotherapeutic manufacturers and cancer research organisations.
The opportunity
We need a systematic, well-organised person to support project work within the Bioanalysis laboratory. The position encompasses a wide range of laboratory work using the latest molecular biology methods. You will be provided with thorough training in measurement science, method validation and to be able to support the delivery of the requirements for provision of accredited services and reference materials. You will be supporting the smooth running of the section by maintaining laboratory reagents and arranging instrument calibrations.
What’s in it for you?
Working at NMI means you are joining one of the world leaders in measurement science. NMI has a diverse range of roles and priorities that will enable you to learn new skills and expand your career in interesting and exciting ways. As part of the department, employees at NMI are covered by the relevant enterprise agreement and benefits include:
- 15.4% employer superannuation contribution
- 4 weeks annual leave per year
- 18 days paid personal leave per year.
- maternity and paternity leave
- flexible working arrangements such as teleworking, part time and job sharing where possible.
- salary packaging which allows you to make certain payments using your pre-tax salary.
- access to staff counselling services.
Our ideal candidate
- demonstrated experience with maintenance of molecular biology scientific instrumentation and inventory management of reagents and consumables.
- demonstrated experience and understanding of molecular biology techniques, including digital PCR, qPCR, PCR assays design, and nucleic acids electrophoresis analysis.
- demonstrated experience with preparation and digital PCR based accurate quantification of mixtures of nuclei acids including RNA and genomic DNA.
- effective interpersonal and written communication skills and the ability to work as an individual and in a team to meet deadlines.
- knowledge of and experience in computer applications relating to data manipulation and Microsoft Office programs.
What you will do
You will be accountable for managing your workflow to deliver timely, high-quality results.
The main functions of the position will be:
- contribution to preparation of protocols, reports and quality documents
- ensuring adequate supplies of reagents and materials are maintained to enable the section to meet business goals
- support maintenance of scientific equipment and arranging calibration services when required
- organising couriers to deliver reference materials to customers nationally and internationally
- contributing to maintenance of a safe workplace.
Eligibility
You will have a good conceptual understanding of genetic analysis gained through tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience.
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.
Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Notes
Since you may be handling biological materials such as human blood or wastewater, we will provide relevant vaccinations if needed and assessment of immunity.
The department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles. However, this is laboratory-based role located in Lindfield, Sydney.
A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
