Full job description

Love a clear process, a steady rhythm and getting good at running a machine? This might be your first job, or your first job that isn't retail, and that's exactly who we're looking for.

Rewind Photo Lab is Sydney's busiest film lab. Every day rolls of film come through our Alexandria lab from professionals and hobbyists across Australia. Once the film is developed, it has to be scanned, checked, cut, sleeved and packed, and the whole flow runs on equipment and software you'll learn to operate yourself.

You don't need to know anything about film or photography. We train you on the job, on professional gear most people never get near.

The equipment and systems you'll run

  • High-volume lab scanning. You'll load 35mm and 120 medium format film into the carriers, set the correct format and resolution for each order, and keep the machines fed so they never sit idle
  • Order tracking software: every roll is barcoded and tracked from intake to upload. You'll scan job bags in and out, match film to orders and keep the digital record accurate
  • Cutting and sleeving: negatives are cut into strips and sleeved, neatly and consistently, hundreds of times a shift

What a shift looks like

  • Pick up the day's queue in priority order
  • Scan, check, cut, sleeve, pack, upload, close the job, next roll
  • Keep your scanner, workstation and bench clean. Film is irreplaceable, so dust and fingerprints matter
  • Work mostly on your own once trained, managing your own pace against the queue

You'll love this job if

  • You get satisfaction from doing the same thing well, over and over, and getting faster at it
  • You're organised and notice small details
  • You're comfortable with computers and pick up new software without much fuss
  • You've worked somewhere fast-paced before, like a kitchen, a warehouse, a production line or a busy shop

No photography background is needed. If you already use Lightroom or have a good eye for colour, that's a bonus, not a requirement.

Hours and availability

  • Casual role, starting at 1 to 2 shifts a week
  • Growing to 3 to 4 shifts a week from October through November, our busiest time
  • Shifts are 6 to 8 hours, Monday to Saturday
  • You'll need to be available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Exact days can shift week to week.
  • Suits students, school leavers and anyone wanting regular part-time hours that build over spring

Training

Full training on the job. Within a couple of weeks you'll be running a Scanner on your own, and you'll leave knowing how professional film scanning actually works, which very few people can say.

Pay: From $34.76 per hour
