With more than 80 medical laboratories and approximately 2,000 patient collection centres nationwide, we process approximately one in four Medicare-funded pathology tests each year, supporting services that extend from some of Australia’s largest and most complex private and public hospitals to regional areas and remote Indigenous communities.
About The Role
As a Pathology Collector, you will collect blood and non-blood samples while delivering a positive, professional and caring experience to every patient. You’ll play an important role in ensuring samples are handled accurately and efficiently to support timely diagnosis and care.
Your duties will include:
Collection of pathology samples, such as:
- Blood collection (evacuated or non-evacuated)
- Skin or capillary blood collection
- Urine collection (sterile/unsterile, and/or supervision of patient specimen collection), including timed urine collection
- Other routine pathology specimen collection
- Swab collection (wound, nasal, MRSA, vaginal & male urethral)
- ECG, Holter monitor & blood pressure monitor fitting/collection
- Performance of respiratory function tests & urea breath tests
Other duties including the performance of procedures in accordance with practice instructions; the care storage and processing of such pathology specimens; the accurate recording of information relating to patients/clients and specimens in accordance with practice instructions; operate VDU's attending to the well being of patients; liaising with referrers/referees; receive payments of accounts.
Key responsibilities:
- Collect blood and other samples with care, accuracy and attention to detail
- Provide a welcoming, calm and professional experience for patients
- Prepare and package specimens for transport in line with procedures
- Maintain accurate records and follow required processes
- Support smooth daily operations across the collection site
About You
Experienced Pathology Collectors are highly regarded, however this role can suit people from a range of backgrounds. Some of our most successful Collectors have come from working in aged care, disability support, nursing or in customer-facing roles where they have experience supporting people and providing a great service.

Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience in pathology collection is desirable but not essential
- Certificate III in Pathology Collection is desirable but not essential
- A background in healthcare (e.g. aged care, disability, nursing) or strong customer-facing experience
Requirements
- A valid Working With Children Check (WWCC), or willingness to obtain one prior to commencement
- Ability to provide evidence of immunisation requirements including Hepatitis B

Training
This role requires completion of a 6-week paid training program designed to build the essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed in collections. This requires a commitment to full-time hours for the first 2 weeks, followed by a minimum of 25 hours per week. Training is delivered internally as part of our Healius Academy onboarding program and may be accelerated based on previous experience.
