ABOUT US
The Salvation Army is a Christian movement and one of Australia's largest and most-loved charities. We believe in doing good that transforms lives and futures for the better. It is this belief which drives us to find new ways and places where we can make a difference. From times of personal crisis to moments of national grief, we are always here — providing support, safety, community, and opportunity.
Why this role matters
The Salvation Army (Salvos) is one of Australia’s largest providers of alcohol and other drug (AOD) programs including withdrawal management, residential and non-residential rehabilitation, and harm reduction programs. Salvos services go beyond addressing the core issues and challenges associated with problematic substance abuse and provide participants a place of hope, compassion, and dignity to recover safely.
About the role
As an AOD Peer Support Worker, this is your opportunity to support and empower AOD service users across Inner North and Northwest Victoria by contributing a lived experience perspective that enhances engagement, wellbeing and recovery. You will work collaboratively with the Substance Treatment and Recovery (STAR) Intake team and clinical staff, complementing community care, facilitating peer learning and supporting participants to understand their rights and responsibilities.
Reporting to the AOD Manager, this is a Permanent Part-Time position, 22.8 hours per week, based on site in Coburg, Victoria.
Conditions
Compensation is in accordance with the SCHADS Award – Level 3.
How you will make an impact
- Support AOD service users awaiting treatment allocation or engaged with the STAR program

- Improve access to services by assisting participants to navigate health and social systems and connect with community resources

- Maintain inclusive practice by demonstrating professional boundaries and fostering culturally safe interactions
- Strengthen professional practice through supervision, training, development and adherence to policies
- Promote safety and accountability by identifying hazards and reporting incidents in line with requirements
What you will bring
- A Certificate IV in Community Services or related field (AOD, Mental Health) - desirable, or willingness to complete AOD Cert IV in timely manner
- Lived and/or living experience of AOD‑related harms and engagement with AOD treatment/support services
- Demonstrated understanding of the Victorian AOD service delivery framework
- Ability to intentionally and effectively draw on lived experience in a purposeful, recovery oriented way
- Completion of Intentional Peer Support training or willingness to obtain
- Completion of AOD Skillset Competencies or willingness to obtain
- 1–2 years’ experience in an AOD peer support role (desirable)
- A current Employee Working with Children Check
