Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS) is Victoria’s newest public mental health service dedicated to the care of young people aged 12 to 25 experiencing complex mental health challenges.

PYMHWS is leading a bold and values-driven transformation in youth mental health care across Melbourne’s north and west. We exist to walk alongside young people, their families, carers, supporters and kin delivering care that is accessible, inclusive, developmentally appropriate, evidence-informed, and grounded in lived experience. The Department

Pathways Care Team (Pathways) is a new program being established as part of the expansion of our Continuing Care Teams (CCT). Pathways is designed for young people who present with tertiary level mental health needs, but where specialist early intervention programs are not yet indicated or need for this cannot be determined at intake

Our CCT model delivers ongoing, community‑based care for young people experiencing severe and/or complex mental ill health, including mood, personality, substance use, eating and neurodevelopmental disorders. Pathways will strengthen this model by offering case management with a strong emphasis on care coordination, collaborative care, and engagement to support assessment and brief intervention.

The Role

The Pathways Care Program (Pathways) are excited to welcome an enthusiastic, passionate and experienced Youth Peer Worker to our diverse team. As our service continues to develop, we are committed to improving our support by offering evidence-based and specialised care to young people facing mental health challenges. The Youth Peer Worker will play a crucial role in enhancing the care and assistance provided to young people by offering a unique perspective based on personal lived experiences.

This role requires lived experience as a consumer of youth mental health services. The Youth Peer Worker will provide emotional and social support through sharing common experiences with Young People. This position will focus on developing relationships that foster hope and optimism.

By sharing their own lived experience, the Youth Peer Worker can inspire empowerment and self-determination by providing genuine examples of how they have overcome challenges in their own recovery journey.

The Peer Worker will provide key peer-to-peer based supports including direct work with young people, advocacy, connecting young people to resources and the community, relationship building, navigating services, as well as provide a lived experience perspective within the multidisciplinary team.

About You: Essential:
Personal lived experience of mental health challenges and/or mental health service use as a young person.
Previous experience in a consumer peer support role.
Understand problems young people face when accessing mental health services.
Ability to work with diverse young people in a compassionate manner and demonstrate sensitivity to diversity
Capacity to work independently and autonomously, as well as collaboratively as a part of a team.
Ability to write and keep records.
