About Us

For 30 years, Monash College has provided over 90,000 students with a direct pathway to Monash University, one of the world’s top 50 universities, through Diplomas, Foundation Year, and English programs. As a fully owned subsidiary of Monash University, the College serves as the principal gateway to the University for students.

The Opportunity

Monash College is seeking an experienced and student-focused Team Leader, Guardianship & U18 Student Welfare to lead the delivery of high-quality pastoral care and support for our students under the age of 18.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Student Support Services, you will play a key role in supporting students as they transition to independent living and learning. You will co-lead the Guardianship team and provide leadership, guidance and support in managing the unique needs of international students, including complex student matters, critical incidents and after-hours support.

This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the wellbeing, safety and success of young people while working within a dynamic international education environment.

As Team Leader, Guardianship & U18 Student Welfare, you will oversee the delivery of a comprehensive support service for U18 students, ensuring they receive appropriate pastoral care throughout their transition to adulthood and independent study.

You will:

  • Lead and support the Guardianship team, providing direction, coaching, role clarity and feedback to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery, including support for after-hours and emergency matters.
  • Oversee the wellbeing, safety and transition of U18 students, developing and implementing effective processes, programs and initiatives that support their experience and successful transition to College.
  • Manage complex student welfare matters and critical incidents, providing advice and support on sensitive issues including attendance, personal and welfare concerns, assessing risk, coordinating responses and ensuring appropriate escalation and follow-up.
  • Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships, including with students, parents, accommodation providers, agents and internal teams, ensuring timely and effective communication regarding significant student matters.
  • Coordinate support for students at risk, including attendance monitoring and formal processes, working collaboratively with Student Success, Learning and Teaching, Student Administration, Counselling and other relevant teams.
  • Coordinate U18 student programs and communications, including orientation, student support activities and culturally appropriate information across relevant communication channels.
  • Oversee student records, reporting and data, ensuring accurate U18 records, incident reporting and data integrity, and using student data and insights to inform service planning, resourcing and continuous improvement.
  • Manage accommodation and welfare matters, working with accommodation providers to address issues including curfew compliance, behaviour and student wellbeing, and ensuring appropriate follow-up.
  • Maintain regulatory and legislative compliance, contributing to relevant policies, procedures and processes and maintaining a strong understanding of ESOS, the National Code and other applicable requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to enhance processes, systems, service delivery and the U18 student experience, and making recommendations to strengthen the overall Guardianship function.

About You

You will be an experienced student services, education or international education professional who is passionate about supporting young people and creating a safe, inclusive and positive student experience.

You will bring:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and significant relevant professional experience.
  • Experience working in the education sector, particularly in an environment supporting international students.
  • Experience in a team leadership or supervisory capacity, with the ability to coach, support and engage team members.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex student matters and responding appropriately to critical incidents.
  • An understanding of the specific needs and considerations of international and underage students.
  • Knowledge of ESOS, the National Code and other relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and the ability to work sensitively and effectively with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, staff and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written communication, copywriting and editing skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and remain calm and considered when working under pressure.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgement when assessing the urgency and severity of student welfare matters.
  • Experience managing communications across multiple channels, including email and social media.
  • The flexibility to work outside normal business hours when required, including supporting after-hours student welfare and critical incident responses.

Work Location and Flexibility
This is a primarily campus-based role, with the successful candidate expected to undertake most of their work on campus. Due to the operational and student-facing nature of the position, opportunities for remote or hybrid working may be limited.

This role also requires flexibility to work across various Monash University campuses, as needed to support welfare, service delivery and operational requirements.

As part of Monash College's commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment, we will require candidates who proceed to interviews to complete a Conduct and Integrity Declaration form.
