Under broad guidance, the Research Scientist will undertake research and development of marine and seasonal applications as a contribution to various projects. The successful candidate will be a member of the Seasonal and Marine Applications team, and report to the team leader. The team is responsible for developing products and applications to support the delivery of marine, coastal and climate services on synoptic to multi-year timescales, in response to identified needs from internal and external customers.

The primary tasks of this role will be to contribute to the development and verification of a broad range of forecast products and decision support tools for industry, government and management agencies. These new tools require thoughtful design, robust underpinning science and skill assessments, and clear communication to deliver on customer needs. Potential applications could include coastal high water levels and storm surge forecasts for emergency management decision support, subseasonal to seasonal climate information for farmers and graziers, and multiweek forecast products to support renewable energy production.

The successful candidate will work closely with staff in the Bureau's Community Services Group, Research to Operations Program, Business Solutions Group and the Australian Climate Service. You will be expected to have a research background in oceanography, climate science, or a related field, with strong scientific programming and communication skills, and an established publication record.
