Full job description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)'s surgical projects provide quality reconstructive treatment and functional recovery care to help patients who have suffered physical trauma such as gunshot wounds, explosion injuries, and burns to return to their daily lives. MSF is looking for surgeons who have experience in and can treat patients in the fields of burn, plastic, and hand surgery.

Activities

Surgical responsibilities

  • Perform urgent and plastic and reconstructive surgeries.
  • Coordinate surgical activities and ensure high-quality, safe interventions.
  • Maintain accurate and complete operative reports.
  • Provide patients with clear information on proposed procedures, ensuring informed consent and confidentiality.
  • Collaborate closely with operating theatre teams and medical staff across emergency, ICU, and surgical wards.
  • Support and mentor country based surgical staff.

Postoperative care

  • Conduct postoperative rounds and follow-up in surgery and ICU with anaesthetists and unit managers.
  • Issue postoperative prescriptions according to MSF protocols (e.g., antibiotics, wound care).
  • Ensure strict adherence to hygiene and infection-prevention standards.
  • Promote rational and appropriate use of medications.

Requirements

Compliance with the
  • for all potential candidates
  • A Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent
  • At least two years clinical experience as a consultant
  • Reconstructive plastic surgery, microsurgery or orthopedic surgery with at least one year in burn and/or hand surgery
  • Available for assignment for minimum of four weeks
  • Have a current practising certificate and must display no recent gap in clinical experience greater than two years
  • Willingness to abide by Médecins Sans Frontières medical protocols

Desirable

  • For some of our interventions, proven experience in pediatric surgery is desirable
