How do you prioritise your repair jobs and clients on busy days?

Predicting how many people will come into an auto repair shop every day is difficult. Auto mechanics don't know the extent of damage a car has suffered before a detailed inspection.Some people need to wait before getting an accurate estimate of their repair costs and time. A good auto mechanic should be able to give accurate predictions and prioritise their clients effectively. What to look for in an answer:

  • A consistent, proven strategy for multitasking and prioritizing clients
  • Communication skills to explain wait times and repair costs to clients
  • The ability to provide high-quality customer service to set client expectations

Example:

"At the last repair shop I worked for, I always served customers in the order that they arrived at the shop. I also told people how many customers were in front of them and how long I estimated the wait to be. When wait times were long, I suggested people make an appointment or come back later. This shows people I value their time and that my processes are fair."

What was the most challenging repair job you ever handled, and how did you overcome its obstacles?

Knowledgeable auto mechanics should be able to work on a variety of different vehicles, from classic cars to the latest electric vehicles. This question assesses the candidate's familiarity with unusual makes and models and their ability to research information when needed. What to look for in an answer:

  • The ability to solve problems and think creatively when needed
  • Extensive mechanical knowledge and expertise
  • A positive attitude and the ability to overcome challenges

Example:

"The most challenging repair I can remember was on a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby that the owner inherited from a relative. When the customer first brought it in, it was in rough shape and was showing its age. I had never seen one before, so I did a lot of research to find and order the rights parts. After a lot of work and extensive repairs to the engine, exterior, and interior upholstery, the vehicle looked as good as new. The customer was thrilled, and restoring this classic car was a pleasure."

How do you help customers who don't know a lot about cars?

Auto mechanics need to communicate with clients to do their jobs. Customers expect mechanics to find and fix problems promptly. Sometimes they're in a rush and don't want to wait, or are upset to find out they need a costly repair. Candidates should be able to communicate complex vehicle terminology and repair needs to customers who may not have any mechanical knowledge. What to look for in an answer:

  • The ability to prioritise customers' needs
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Communication skills to explain mechanical concepts simply

Example:

"At my last auto shop, a customer didn't agree that he needed new brakes and felt the repair was too expensive. He insisted they were fine, so I showed him his worn brake calipers and explained how they work. I also highlighted the safety hazards of driving with worn brakes and the further mechanical issues they could cause. After explaining the reasons for repair, he understood the risks and was happy to proceed with a replacement."

How do you test drive and inspect vehicles to ensure all systems are working properly?

Inspecting vehicles is an auto mechanic's primary responsibility. Candidates should understand which components are most important to check and how to perform routine test drive procedures. What to look for in an answer:

  • A logical process for checking all car systems to diagnose existing and potential issues
  • Knowledge of computerised diagnostic systems
  • A strong understanding of vehicle testing and repairs

"To conduct a complete check on a vehicle, I start with a visual inspection. I look at the tyres, headlights, taillights, and windshield. A candidate's answer to this question lets you know which types of vehicles they have the most experience with and which repairs they make most often. An excellent answer should exhibit:

  • The ability to investigate abnormalities and discover their causes
  • An interest in learning and honing their skills

"My current auto shop specialises in Ford repairs, but we also work on other makes of vehicles. I am very skilled at adjusting alignment and balancing tyres, and I also know how to troubleshoot engine problems."

Have you ever disagreed with a colleague about how to approach a repair? How did you resolve the dispute?

Auto mechanics often work as part of a team. This question lets you evaluate a candidate's ability to interact with others. What to look for in an answer:

  • Teamwork and respect for coworkers
  • The ability to consider the opinions of others and listen to opposing points of view
  • Communication skills

"One time, I was replacing a client's brake pads. They said that their last brake pads wore out quickly, so I replaced the fully metallic brake pads with more durable semi-metallic brake pads. This question gives the candidate an opportunity to exhibit their practical knowledge. You can ask several variations about different vehicle symptoms to assess their ability to diagnose mechanical issues. What to look for in an answer:

This question tells you how current the candidate's knowledge of vehicle diagnostic software is, and whether they're familiar with industry technology. It also reveals how much on-the-job training a candidate needs to learn the software used by your auto shop. What to look for in an answer:

  • An interest in software
  • The ability to learn new technologies quickly
  • Experience with several kinds of diagnostic programmes

Example:

"If I have trouble diagnosing a problem with an OBD scanner that has its own software, I connect my laptop to cars with the TOAD scanning tool to get more detailed information. If I don't have my laptop, I use OBD Auto Doctor app. I enjoy learning about new technology and am confident I could learn the programmes your auto shop uses quickly."

What's the difference between a crankshaft and a camshaft?

The best way to find out about a candidate's mechanical knowledgeis by asking technical questions. This question gives people a chance to prove their mechanical knowledge. What to look for in an answer:

  • Extensive mechanical knowledge
  • Ability to explain mechanical concepts clearly
  • Experience working with these auto parts

Example:

"A camshaft opens and closes valves at the top of an engine's cylinders to let in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide and other gasses. A crankshaft is connected to an engine's pistons, and it moves the driveshaft and eventually the wheels. Both parts are important for gas vehicles."

What does it mean when the multimeter reading on a car battery is 10?
