Are you okay with staying later than planned when the parents are running a little late?

Parents and guardians sometimes get held up by other activities, requiring that the babysitter stay later so the children aren't left alone. The candidate's response describes their dedication to the job and how much they care about the wellbeing of the children.

What to look for in an answer:

"I have the zeal and responsibility to always be available for the kids. Life is filled with unexpected situations and I know I have to apply my flexible nature towards my work hours.I'm also compassionate and able to understand when parents are faced with unexpected scenarios."

How do you cope with the different behaviour of various children?

Children have different behaviour at any stage of their early lives. A good babysittershould understand this and also know what approach to use on different age grades. You should look out for the general ability of the candidate to handle various young personalities.

What to look for in an answer:

  • Experience working with children
  • Ability to correct behavioural issues
  • Ability to adapt to change

"I see all kids are individuals. They act differently as they grow and change, and so I don't use the same babysitting approach for every child. I observe the characteristics of each kid and treat them accordingly."

How many families have you babysat before? What age were the children?

This question determines whether the candidate has sufficient experience. A good babysitter can adapt to working with children of all ages. However, you may prefer someone with experience managing baby and toddlers' needs, or how to engage with young teens.

This question assesses the candidate's understanding of their best personal attributes. It gives them an opportunity to describe what makes them best suited to look after children.

How do you establish authority when starting in a new household?

Babysitters act as guides to the kids when their parents are absent. Therefore, a candidate's strategy for establishing a leadership role is highly important. This question evaluates the candidate's ability to create a fun environment for the kids while maintaining authority and respect.

In cases like going to bed, taking baths and eating meals, there is a high tendency for tantrums as the child might not be in the mood or is simply acting silly. The candidate must be ready for this kind of situation and know how to avert them.

Do you have other relevant skills for the role?

A good babysitter benefits from other skills beyond connecting with the children. For example, they should be prepared for emergencies and have basic cooking knowledge. This question gives the candidate an opportunity to share any of their strengths you may not have covered in the rest of the interview.

Do you consider tidying the house as part of your duties?

A good candidate is able to keep the house in order in the absence of the parents. They also maintain a safe and hygienic environment for the children while conducting basic cleaning duties. The candidate should have an instinct for tidying and making sure everything is always in order.

Are you available for overnight stays?

This question aims to test the flexibility of the candidate with work hours. Some circumstances may require a babysitter to stay overnight while the parents are out. Candidates who are still in school or have multiple clients may not be able to accommodate these requests. So it's an important question to ask if you expect to need this service.

What to look for in an answer:

  • Available for extended stays as needed
  • Flexible schedule
  • Confidence in additional tasks like putting children to bed and preparing them for school in the morning

Example:

"My schedule is flexible, so I'm happy to stay overnight on occasion as needed. I have experience bathing and preparing children for bed, and ensuring they're ready for bed. I have also helped a previous client's children prepare for school in the morning."

What would you do if you were unable to make an appointment?

A good babysitter should have the basic instinct of communication whenever the time arises. What the candidate does when they can't meet up with an agreed time shows how well they care about the parents and the children. Look out for individuals who have excellent time management and communication skills.

Good candidates should have several activities prepared for different age groups of children. Those who are familiar with helpful learning and cognitive development activities are preferable.

A candidate with relevant experience babysitting children with special needs is very versatile. Such individuals have the requisite expertise and flexibility to deal with different categories of children.

A babysitter needs a good idea of babysitting standards and current trends required to provide better services. The candidate's response helps you understand how informed they are. It also provides insight into their techniques and babysitting style.

Some children may have allergies to foods like nuts, gluten, dairy, or be following a vegetarian or vegan diet with their families. It's imperative for babysitters to understand the health risks and follow strict dietary requirements as needed.

  • Dedication to maintaining a safe environment for children
  • Ability to adhere to parents' instructions

Example:

"I always speak with parents about dietary requirements before I start in a new household. The children's health and wellbeing is my priority, so I like to be aware of what they can and cannot eat, even if there isn't a safety risk. I always request a list of foods that are off limits, and to know where an EpiPen is located if the child has an allergy."

How do you predict things that could go wrong while babysitting? How do you deal with them?

Another important job of a babysitter is to anticipate and mitigate challenges. The candidate must be very observant and proactive when on duty.
