How does your experience and training qualify you for this role?  

An ideal candidate will have some previous experience working in a warehouse environment. If the material handler is working with hazardous materials, such as asbestos, they may need special certifications or training. What to look for in an answer:

  • Understanding of the job

Example:

"I've taken a material handler safety course and worked for a few years in a warehouse for a storage company. I enjoyed working with machines and the fast-paced nature of the work. I'm looking forward to using my skills to help your company grow."

What do you know about the company, and why do you want to work for us?

You want a candidate who is enthusiastic about working for your company. They should have a basic understanding of your mission statement, clientele, competitors, and role in the company. This question allows you to gauge how well they researched the company before the interview. What to look for in an answer:

  • Knowledge of the company and industry
  • Understanding how the job fits into the company's structure
  • Vibrant and energetic personality

"I know that your business has been the top-moving company in the city for many years. I researched what type of equipment and computer software you use, and I'm familiar with all of the tools. What are the most challenging aspects of the job, and how will you meet those challenges?  

A material handler has many duties, such as maintaining inventory, identifying materials, placing materials in stock, delivering materials, and preparing products for shipment. You need to know if the candidate can keep up with the pace of work at your company. Qualities to look for in their answer include:

  • Desire to take on new challenges
  • Hard working 
  • Knowledge of all the duties of the job 

Example:

"The job requires a lot of different tasks to be completed on a daily basis but that motivated me to apply. I enjoy keeping busy, working with people, and making contributions to a workplace. My discipline and commitment to the company will allow me to meet the challenges of the job."

Are you able to meet the physical demands of the job?

You need to know that the candidate has the strength and stamina to perform the job effectively. A material handler moves, loads, and unloads heavy materials. They are on their feet for long periods and are required to climb, bend, and reach. A candidate's answer may emphasise the following:

  • Ability to lift heavy objects
  • Good level of physical fitness 
  • Desire to work in a job that requires a lot of lifting and movement

How are your time management skills, and how will those skills make you successful in this role?

A successful material handler thrives in a fast-paced environment. Asking this question will help you determine whether the candidate can work quickly and efficiently by performing required tasks such as monitoring supplies, sorting and packing material, and storing cargo. A candidate's answer can demonstrate:

  • Ability to complete various tasks during a shift
  • Prepared to work different shifts, depending on the company's needs
  • Detail-oriented 

Example:

 "I enjoy working on various tasks during a work shift, which requires excellent time management skills. I start my day by prioritizing the tasks that need to be completed first, and then, I move on to the less important ones. This allows me to contribute to the company in a positive way because I can complete all my tasks diligently and efficiently."

How experienced are you in using warehouse machinery and equipment?

You need to know that the candidate can operate machines such as winches, industrial trucks and tractors, conveyors, cranes, forklifts, and pallets. They should also be able to inspect and repair equipment. What to look for in an answer:

  • Comfortable using warehouse machinery 
  • Skilled at working with their hands
  • Ability to learn new techniques

How do you ensure you follow safety protocols, and what do you do to promote safety in the workplace?  

It's crucial for a material handler to follow safe work practises. They also need to encourage their coworkers to perform tasks safely. The candidate's answer should emphasise maintaining a safe workplace environment. Qualities to look for in their answer include:

  • Commitment to safety 
  • Ability to abide by company policies
  • Willingness to help coworkers

"Safety is a priority for me in any job I do. Before the first day of training, I make sure to learn about all of the company's rules for workplace safety. Describe a time when you resolved a conflict in the workplace.

This question reveals the candidate's conflict resolution skills. how well they get along with their coworkers, and if they can promote harmony in the workplace. A candidate's answer may emphasise:

  • An ability to appreciate different perspectives and viewpoints 
  • The ability to remain calm

"In my previous job, there was a disagreement between two employees who I worked with closely. I gathered them together for a meeting and took an impartial approach to resolve the conflict. I listened to both sides and reminded them of the importance of teamwork in the workplace. After a good discussion, their disagreement was  resolved and they were able to focus on their work tasks."

What techniques do you use to monitor and manage inventory effectively?

Managing inventory properly is important for a company to reduce costs and maximise sales. This is a big part of a material handler's job. The candidate is should have a good understanding of following effective warehouse principles. Qualities to look for in their answer include:

  • Planning and organisational skills 
  • Experience working in a warehouse
  • Ability to sort products in an orderly manner

Example:

"I monitor and manage inventory effectively by staying organised and carefully tracking warehouse stock and the locations of materials. I have the ability to maintain accurate and updated records. Collabourating with coworkers has helped me become more successful in this area."

How do you ensure accuracy when you're entering data and preparing reports?  

A material handler performs tasks such as documenting orders and deliveries, recording units shipped, and tracking supply levels. You need to know if the candidate can complete these duties accurately in order for your company to deliver the best services possible. What to look for in an answer: 

  • Data entry skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision 

Example:

"I have strong verbal and written communications skills, which helps me record and update information accurately. I'm self-motivated and detail-oriented. I meet deadlines and perform tasks efficiently. I'm also familiar with various computer software programmes, which improves my data entry skills."

Why is it important to be a good communicator in this role?  

Tasks that require a material handler to have good communications skills include contacting vendors for pick-ups and returns, communicating inventory shortages, and making recommendations for purchases. A good employee is able to communicate well with customers, coworkers, and supervisors. A candidate's answer demonstrates:

How do you rate your basic math skills and ability to take measurements?

Basic math skills are important for a material handler to have for the management of inventory. They need to be skilled at weighing materials and using various tools to take measurements. With this question, you can discover the candidate's ability to complete tasks in a timely manner. What to look for in an answer: 

  • Ability to perform tasks that require basic math skills
  • Experience using warehouse measurement tools
  • Attention to detail

"I excelled in math in school, and I worked in a warehouse for a few years. I do carpentry work in my spare time, so I'm comfortable taking measurements. Any time I need to work on a certain skill to complete a task, I take steps to improve the skill."

Do you have the ability to work well as part of a team?

A material handler works closely with many different employees, such as warehouse associates, receivers, general labourers, and forklift operators.  You need to know if the candidate can support and encourage coworkers and worked in a team. They should have an understanding of how the various jobs in the company relate to each other. Qualities to look for in their answer include:

  • Teamwork and reliability 
  • Communication skills
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback

Example:

"I enjoy collabourating with coworkers on initiatives and projects. I'm skilled at motivating the people around me, and I acknowledge the accomplishments of others.
