What is your favourite medical discipline to work in and why?

RNs can work in many fields, which is why you need to know which field the candidate is interested in pursuing. This question also provides you with insight into the candidate's passions. Here's what to look for in a good answer:

  • Passion for a particular aspect of the medical field
  • Demonstrates experience in healthcare
  • Feels comfortable working in different environments

Example:

"I like working in most disciplines. I have experience in the neonatal unit as well as in cardiac care. I'm most interested in working with cardiac care, though, because it was fast-paced and I was always learning something new."

How do you manage your time when you have patients who are particularly sick while maintaining a full patient load?

Have you worked in interdisciplinary teams before? If so, what was your experience like?

Registered nurses typically work in environments where there are multiple disciplines and specialties. Consider choosing a candidate who has experience working on interdisciplinary teams and who enjoys doing so. Here's what to look for in a good answer:

  • Experience as a registered nurse
  • Understands terminology across different medical departments
  • Ability to translate complex terms from interdisciplinary teams to patients

"I've worked on these teams before. I previously worked at a private clinic, where we had social workers, dieticians, and geriatrics. It's always interesting to learn about different professions and how we can work collectively to help our patients."

What was your most difficult day as an RN?

This question will inform you of possible triggers for the candidate and also let you know when the candidate may need additional support. Here's what to look for in a good answer:

  • Adaptable
  • Ability to overcome challenging situations
  • Ability to handle stress

Example:

"The hardest day I had as a nurse was the first time I lost a patient. I thought I was prepared for it, but it was a patient I particularly liked. I'd completed my care plan and done everything in my power to help her, but we still lost her. Since then, I've learned to put more distance between my emotions and my job. It's always sad to lose a patient, but it doesn't affect me in the same way."

Why should I pick you over another nurse?

This question is to the point and provides the nurse with an opportunity to express their accomplishments in the field. The right candidate should be humble when answering this question. Here's what to look for in a good answer:

  • Discusses accomplishments
  • Demonstrates theoretical and practical knowledge
  • Remains respectful towards other applicants

Example:

"I've been wanting to work in this hospital since I first started nursing school. I only apply to hospitals that have values that match my own, which is why I applied here. My colleagues were all excellent and deserve to have the jobs of their dreams, but you won't have an employee who works harder than I do."

Tell me about yourself. 

This question gives you more insight into who the candidate is and how they perceive themselves. Beyond this, however, it may also show you how the nurse would fit into your current team. Here's what to look for in a good answer:

  • Refers to their professional and personal life
  • Describes future goals
  • References interest in their community

Example:

"I'm someone who has always invested my time in my community and who finds value in participating in group projects. I work best when I'm in a team and have something to contribute. That's why I want to work in a hospital like yours, where the nurses are part of bigger teams."

Why did you choose this hospital?

This question gives you insight into the candidate's priorities and why they think they'd be a good addition to your team. Look for someone who has the intention to stay with your hospital long term. Here's what to look for in a good answer:

  • Demonstrates the intention to work in company long term
  • Knowledge of the hospital and open job position
  • Specifies career goals

Example:

"I want to work at this hospital because it matches my overall values. I did an internship here when I first started my education about three years ago, and I fell in love with your company culture and the benefits of working here. I also know that most of your nurses have worked here for a long time, and I want to contribute to the team."
