10 Farm Hand Interview Questions and Answers

Can you tell me what you know about my farm?

This question can identify an applicant’s understanding of the role they are applying for and whether they are aware of the environment they will be required to work in. What to look for in an answer:

  • accurate description of your farming activities
  • confidence in answering the question
  • enthusiasm about the nature of the work.
Example:

"I understand your farm is a mixed farm with sheep and cattle as well as crops. I’m interested in a role that has variety rather than specialising in one area of farming, so I thought it would be the perfect fit for me.

Why are you interested in working on a farm?

This question will identify a candidate’s motivation for applying for your role and whether they are prepared for the realities of the work. What to look for in an answer:

  • interest and passion for working with animals or growing crops
  • willingness to undertake physical labour and work outside
  • previous experience of being around animals or working with plants.
Example:

"I’m interested in working outside and working with animals, so I studied agriculture as a subject in high school. I enjoyed this subject, so I decided to pursue farm hand work as a way to get into the industry."

What experience do you have of working with or being around animals?

As farm hand can be an entry-level role, your applicants may not hold prior farm experience. Therefore, asking this question may identify their experience with animals in general. It will also identify the types of animals they have experience with, which may be an advantage if you require them to work with animals of a similar size or temperament. What to look for in an answer:

  • relevant experience with animals
  • a positive attitude towards relevant animals
  • basic knowledge of animals.
Example:

"Growing up, my family had chickens in our backyard, and I would love collecting the eggs and being around them. I think chickens have great personalities. I’ve been interested in pursuing farm work ever since then, and so when I saw your advertisement for this position on your egg farm, I thought it would be the perfect place for me to start my career."

What experience do you have of working in a team?

Asking this question may identify the types of teams that the candidate has been involved with, as you may find they have developed teamwork skills from being part of a hobby or sporting club. This question may also reveal whether they enjoy working well with other people. What to look for in an answer:

  • examples of relevant teamwork experience
  • willingness to be involved in a team environment
  • cultural fit, if their interests and values align with those of your organisation.
Example:

"In my previous role, I was part of a team of six people who were required to work together to ensure all tasks assigned to us that day were completed. I enjoyed the camaraderie of working with other people and supporting people to achieve a common goal."

What are the challenges of working in a fast-paced work environment and how do you handle them?

Asking this question will identify whether the candidate has experience working in a fast-paced work environment, similar to what they will encounter on your farm. It will also reveal how they tackle challenges, including whether they hold transferable skills from work in another industry. What to look for in an answer:

  • examples of prior experience
  • strong work ethic
  • critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Example:

"My previous role was in a fast-paced industry, and I found it presented many challenges. To name one, it can be overwhelming when faced with a lot of work. I find it can be best to take a moment to analyse the tasks at hand and plan my priorities or next steps, and to seek support, such as asking what the priorities are, if I’m in doubt."

What types of farm machinery do you know how to operate?

This question will not only identify the types of machinery that the applicant can already use, but also what they may be interested in learning to operate. While you may not require them to use machinery in their role, knowing what licences they hold may help you to decide between two good candidates. What to look for in an answer:

  • knowledge of farm equipment and machinery
  • if they hold relevant licences to operate machinery
  • interest in machinery, such as a willingness to learn and machinery repair experience.
Example:

"I have my driver’s licence, so I can drive farm utes. Although I haven’t driven a tractor before, I have been around tractors when I visited my cousins on their farm, so I know roughly how they work, and I am keen to learn to operate one."

What measures would you take to ensure safety while working on a farm?

Asking this question can identify a candidate’s attitude towards farm safety and their level of knowledge of occupational health and safety practices. What to look for in an answer:

  • a basic knowledge of farm safety measures
  • examples of safety measures they are willing to undertake
  • a positive attitude towards using safety measures.
Example:

"I haven’t worked on a farm before, but I know that there can be dangers. I would ensure that I wear the appropriate clothes, such as long pants, to prevent scratches. I know chemicals need to be handled in a certain way. Certain machinery also requires users to wear eye protection. I’m a quick learner, so once the measures I need to take are explained to me, I’ll follow them."

How do you prioritise tasks when several problems arise simultaneously?

This question can reveal an applicant’s ability to respond to unexpected challenges that often occur when working on a farm, such as working with animals. It may also give them an opportunity to outline their ability to work independently when required. What to look for in an answer:

  • organisational and problem-solving skills
  • an ability to work under pressure
  • an example of how they have prioritised tasks effectively.
Example:

"I understand that working on a farm can be unpredictable, and there may not always be someone nearby who I can ask about priorities when incidents happen. As an example, I would address a problem that posed the greatest risk of danger to others and animals first before tackling others, such as…"

Tell me about a time that you came across something that would cause a problem or situation someone else has missed. What did you do about it?

This question may reveal various information about the applicant, depending on their answer. Overall, it will reveal problem-solving skills that will help your farm run effectively. What to look for in an answer:

  • conflict management or communication skills
  • an ability to work in a team or take initiative
  • attention to detail or a strong work ethic.
Example:

"In my previous role, I noticed a co-worker had overlooked a problem, and although it was the end of my shift, I knew it needed to be addressed immediately. I stayed back late to remedy the problem and sent the co-worker a message notifying them that I had fixed it. If it had occurred again, I would raise it with them once more personally, or decide whether to inform the team leader."

Have you ever had to work for long hours and/or in extreme weather conditions, and how did you cope?

This question will identify the knowledge an applicant holds of the working conditions on a farm and whether they understand basic safety principles. What to look for in an answer:

  • ability to make appropriate weather safety choices
  • awareness of issues such as physical fatigue
  • examples of experience working in relevant conditions.
Example:

"I play football, so I am used to being physical and outside in all kinds of weather conditions, such as the heat at the start of the season and hail in the middle of winter. But I know on a farm, things like sun safety are important, so wearing a hat is a must. Staying hydrated is also essential, and I think it is better to take a break when fatigued than to push through and risk injuring myself or others."

Three individuals are sitting at a table with a laptop, a disposable coffee cup, notebooks, and a phone visible. Two are facing each other, while the third’s back is to the camera. The setting appears to be a bright room with large windows.
