Crane operator Interview Questions

‘I use a few different strategies to help me stay alert and focused. For example, I drink coffee throughout my shift and make sure that I take regular short breaks every hour or two. This stops me from getting too tired and losing focus. I also find that getting plenty of sleep before my shift helps me to stay alert and focused throughout the day.’

‘I have only started working with blueprints fairly recently, but in my most recent role, I was required to use blueprints often. My manager showed me how to read blueprints and I picked it up quite quickly. I am now confident that I can interpret the information in blueprints and use it to operate cranes safely.’

‘Throughout my career, I have gained experience operating a range of different crane models. When I first started out, I worked with pick-and-carry and crawler cranes for a few years. I then worked in the mining industry for several years, where I mainly operated tower cranes. I also have experience using all-terrain cranes.’

‘The first thing I would do is identify the source of the problem. If it was a minor issue like a faulty switch, I would quickly fix it myself. However, for any major problem, such as a broken part, I would request the assistance of a mechanic.’

‘My supervisor once asked me to transport some machinery from one side of a construction site to the other. The only way to get to the other side of the site was through a narrow passageway between two buildings, which was too tight for the crane. I improvised by lifting the machinery over the building safely using the boom arm.’

‘Working in all kinds of weather conditions would have to be the most challenging aspect of being a crane operator. I’ve been a crane operator for six years and I’ve worked in heat, rain and even snow. But I’m used to it now. I prepare for working in poor weather conditions by wearing suitable clothing and using safety equipment when necessary.’

‘It’s important to make sure that the equipment is all functioning optimally. I always check the fluid levels and make sure everything is properly tightened before I start the job. Another thing I do is plan the most efficient route. For example, I usually park close to objects I know I’m going to need to lift so that I avoid unnecessary driving.’

‘The first step is to stop operating the crane immediately. The next step is to inform my supervisor and ask them to help me assess the issue. If it turned out to be a major mechanical issue that we couldn’t easily fix, we would need to find another solution, such as using another piece of equipment to perform the operation I was working on.’

‘In my previous role, I was required to use various kinds of diagrams and schematics to operate cranes safely. Before attempting a lift, I needed to consult a load chart to determine whether the crane would be able to perform the lift safely. I also followed rigging diagrams when setting up cranes for specific jobs.’

‘Over the past six years, I have gained experience operating a broad range of different types of cranes, including mobile cranes. I am highly reliable, work efficiently while prioritising safety and have in-depth knowledge of crane safety procedures. I have several certifications, including an elevated work platform licence and spotter ticket. I am highly motivated and keen to learn new things, while perfecting my current skills.’
