15 Drafter Interview Questions and Answers

What are your techniques for creating design drafts?

This question will help to give you insight into how well the candidate understands the key software and processes to take in order to complete any project they work on. What to look for in an answer:

  • Ability to analyse their work
  • Design skills
  • In-depth knowledge of key software and skills for the role

Example:

"Before starting a project, I make sure to collect all relevant information required from the engineers, surveyors and architects. Once I have that, I will start with rough sketches to make sure all of my calculations are correct. It's only after I think the project is near complete I will input the information into AutoCAD or a similar software programme to finalise the project."

What kind of processes do you use to prioritise work and ensure you are meeting design deadlines?

This question will allow you to see if the candidate has the right project management skills to perform the job effectively. What to look for in an answer:

  • Project management skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work under pressure

Example:

"Having done this job for over 10 years, I have a good idea about how long each project and type of design will take. Before I start my week, I take a look at the higher priority items and ensure that the ones with more immediate deadlines are the ones fulfiled first."

What is the most challenging project you've worked on and was it a successful project?

This question will give you a good insight into how the applicant thinks critically and can solve problems no matter how challenging. What to look for in an answer:

  • Critical thinking skills
  • Previous work experience
  • Skills required to perform complex jobs

Example:

"One of the most challenging projects I worked on was helping with the drawings and construction of an Olympic stadium. Not only was the project in itself a large one but the deadlines were tight and there was very little room for error. I was able to work on a large team so we held regular meetings and used a project management programme to make sure the deadlines were being met."

Are you able to remove the empty layers from a drawing and if so, how do you do it?

This question will help to give you more insight into the technical job requirements and the job applicants understanding of them. What to look for in an answer:

  • Empty layers can be removed
  • Understanding of how those layers can be removed
  • Explanation of how it works

Example:

"Yes, empty layers can be removed but they can only be removed when any objects that exist in the layer are deleted. Once the layer is actually empty, you are able to remove them by using the export command. By doing this, you are creating a DXT file which can also be edited in another programme."

What file formats do you use in your design?

This question is another technical question that allows the job applicant to show off their knowledge of the software programmes used for the job. What to look for in an answer:

  • Proper file formats
  • Alternative file formats and their usage
  • Thorough explanation

Example:

"When using AutoCAD, the most appropriate file format used is a .dwg file. However, if the file is going to be used in other programmes then it is best to use a DXF file so that it can act interchangeably. I tend to use DXF files if I'm going to be sending files to external agencies or other professions not as equipped with AutoCAD knowledge."

Why do you prefer to use AutoCAD and what are its advantages?

This question should give you insight into the candidates' knowledge of the AutoCAD programme and if they know all of the intricacies they would need to know to perform their job. What to look for in an answer:

  • Helps digitise the job
  • Allows for a more realistic view of what they are drawing
  • Helps to save time

Example:

"AutoCAD is a fantastic programme to help me perform my job. First and foremost it helps me save time by allowing me to have my drawings digitally. It's also much easier to share work with colleagues and other departments. Of course, using AutoCAD also helps me get a realistic view of the object I'm drawing and creating."

What do you love most about being a Drafter?

This question will help you better understand if the applicant has a passion for what they do and genuinely enjoys the job. What to look for in an answer:

  • Reasons why they love the job
  • Mention of technical aspects of the job
  • Any key skills or characteristics related to the job

Example:

"I became a Drafter because I love being able to see my work come to life. I'm a very detail-oriented person, so being able to create plans that work perfectly to create something is always exciting for me. I take great pride in my work and have spent a lot of time perfecting my skills, including taking additional classes at night and on the weekends to keep me up to date with any changes in my industry."

Can you explain how you would build an interface in AutoCAD?

This question is a popular one to ask in Drafter interviews because it's another technical question that showcases the applicant's awareness of the uses of AutoCAD. What to look for in an answer:

  • Technical explanation of how this is done
  • Using common terminology
  • Examples of how or when they've done this

Example:

"Of course, I would perform this particular function quite frequently in my old job. To make an interface with AutoCAD you need to use command prompts. Using the PLOT command and the external database commands (ASE) you can view the dialog boxes. From here you can edit and customise any of the interfaces you need to."

What skills do you have that are the most important for a Drafter to have?

This question should give you an idea of the kind of hard and soft skills the job applicant has. What to look for in an answer:

  • Creativity or an ability to create drawings from scratch
  • Experience working with AutoCAD
  • Regulations related to the particular industry the applicant will be working in

Example:

"Definitely the most important skill I have, and any Drafter should have, is experience working with AutoCAD. I'm also a very creative person which I think is important for the role. Having strong attention to detail is also a key characteristic for anyone working as a drafter. I'm also very aware of the rules and regulations of our industry."

What do you find is the most difficult part of your role as a Drafter?

This question should give you insight into knowledge gaps the job candidate might have or areas that they need to improve on. What to look for in an answer:

  • How they overcome weaknesses
  • Understanding of what they need to work on
  • Knowledge of difficult aspects of the job

Example:

"I would definitely say the hardest part of the job for me is keeping up to date with all of the requested changes thrown my way during a project. When you're working with a number of different teams it can be hard to manage. I'm trying to overcome this by keeping post-it notes on my desktop anytime a change comes in from an email so I can easily reference them."

How do you stay organised in your job?

This question is a great one to ask to get an idea of how the job applicant stays organised because it is an important skill to have for anyone working as a Drafter. What to look for in an answer:

  • Tools they use to keep them organised
  • Process the job applicant uses
  • Passion for staying organised

Example:

"It is really important to stay organised as a drafter. I have a great labeling system for my emails so I'm always aware of what the top priority items are and what needs to be actioned right away. I also use Trello to help me project manage. It's also important to have a great digital filing system with completed projects in case they need to be referenced in the future."

What is your opinion about AutoCAD WS and do you use it?

This question is meant to showcase the technical knowledge of the job applicant and to give insight into their use of AutoCAD outside of the office. What to look for in an answer:

  • Awareness of AutoCAD WS
  • How it is used
  • Approach to digital platforms

Example:

"AutoCAD WS is a great programme for anyone who needs to make changes on the go. I've found in past jobs it's a great platform to use when I'm visiting a site or in a meeting and need to adjust something really quickly. AutoCAD WS allows me to edit, share or view anything in real-time from my mobile device so it's really helpful."

What field experience do you have as a Drafter and how does it relate to this position?

If you are looking for a candidate with years of experience, it is best to ask it in the interview so you are aware of how experienced they are. What to look for in an answer:

  • Length of experience
  • Skills built up over time while on the job
  • Relating experience back to the current position

Example:

"I have worked as a Drafter for over 15 years but have spent the last 5 years working in this industry. Making the transition I had the chance to learn a lot about the different rules and regulations required to perform my job. I have also been able to build up a network of contacts that I can lean on for support to get a project fully completed."

Have you taken any steps to improve your drafting technical knowledge in the past 3 years?

This question will help give a better understanding of how up-to-date the candidate stays in their industry. What to look for in an answer:

  • Related school or college programmes
  • Goal-oriented
  • Key motivation

Example:

"I do my best to take a new course or certificate every 5 years to make sure that I am up-to-date with the latest trends and technology in my field. Just last year, I finished a course that looked at the new updates from AutoCAD and how I can use them in my day-to-day job or on any new projects coming up."

Working as a Drafter can often mean working under pressure, how do you manage stressful work environments?

This question should shed light on whether or not the applicant can handle stressful situations and, if so, how they manage them. What to look for in an answer:

  • Way they handle deadlines
  • organisational skills
  • Previous experience working under pressure

Example:

"I am no stranger to working under pressure and dealing with tight deadlines. I do my best to manage what I can by staying incredibly organised. Another method I've adopted to manage stressful situations is by cancelling any meetings that I don't necessarily need to attend or keeping phone calls short and to the point."
