The goal of asking this question is to discover what retail sales experience an applicant has. You can also learn what a candidate does to improve their skills and qualifications. Look for the following in an applicant's answer:

"In my previous role, I worked as a shop assistant at a retail clothing company. I was in charge of serving customers that came into the shop and helping with their shopping needs. How do you stay motivated when performing repetitive tasks?

The core duties of a shop assistant, such as receiving deliveries, processing orders, and organizing shipments, may be repetitive. By asking this question, you can learn how an applicant delivers quality services when performing the same tasks daily. Look for:

Some customers won't be satisfied with a shop assistant's customer service. Asking this question tells you how an applicant would handle such customers. It can also reveal whether they're willing to learn and work on their customer service skills. What to look for in a candidate's answer:

"I'm available to work any shift on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and weekends. I'mavailable for both day and night shifts on those days, but I'm not available to work on Tuesdays and Thursdays because I'm a college student. I'm available to work some holidays as well.'

Although shop assistants run shifts, they need to collabourate with other employees. Asking this question tells you if a candidate can get along with other people. Look for the following in an answer:

"I work well with other shop assistants, and I think being a team player is important for this role. If my team member has a work-related issue, I always strive to help them out. I also understand that being a team player is an easy way to learn on the job."

What would you do if your shift replacement was unavailable?

As an employer, you should expect situations when a shop assistant doesn't show up for work. The goal of this question is to assess how an applicant would help another employee and manage the situation to prevent customer dissatisfaction. Look for:

"I would first reach out to my shift replacement to understand their situation. From their response, I would know if they are just stuck with something or unavailable to work that day. An ideal applicant won't think the role of a shop assistant is easy. Instead, they would be proactive. Look for an answer that explains how the candidate handled and solved a challengein the past. What to expect in an answer:

"I think one challenge could be trying to serve customers when the store is busy. In my previous role at an electronics shop, I had several customers to serve. I would also apologise to customers for the inconvenience and tell them I appreciate their understanding when they return.'

The goal of asking this question is to determine what an applicant knows about the company or organisation. Candidates who research a hiring company before an interview tend to be more passionate about working there. Look for the following in an answer:

"I think customers buy things from this shop because of the shopping experience. From my previous visits, I noticed that the shop was always neat and there were fresh flowers. I also noticed that the employees that worked here were friendly."

Imagine a customer suddenly becomes annoyed and demands to speak to your supervisor. How would you handle this situation?

Sometimes things may be challenging for a shop assistant. However, an ideal candidate must know how to handle customers who want to talk to senior management such as the shop manager. Look for the following in an answer:

This question helps an interviewer understand how a shop assistant maintains professionalism when dealing with situations with customers. Look for the following in an applicant's answer:

"If I suspected someone was shoplifting, I would respectfully confront them. If I noticed they were carrying an item they didn't pay for and walking towardss the door, I would politely ask them to return it. Then, I would notify the shop manager or senior manager of the situation. I would also recommend a procedure or policy to a senior manager to prevent shoplifting incidents from occurring in the future."
