10 Rigger Interview Questions and Answers

When should you use a fall prevention system?

The goal of this question is to assess whether the candidate has knowledge of safety regulations and how they apply these to their work. What to look for in an answer:

  • knowledge of safe work practices
  • ability to assess hazards
  • critical thinking

Example:

‘Generally, a fall prevention system is needed if people are working at heights of two metres or higher or if people need to work within two metres of the edge of a roof. However, you should assess the risk on a case-by-case basis. For example, I recently installed a platform that was only 1.7 metres high, but it was beside a production line and there were many hazards, such as surfaces with sharp edges. So, I installed a guardrail to ensure the safety of the workers.’

If you noticed a co-worker not following safety protocols, how would you handle the situation?

A good Rigger must have a strong awareness of safety and be willing to confront people who are potentially putting themselves or others at risk. What to look for in an answer:

  • a commitment to the safety of others
  • verbal communication skills
  • a team player attitude

Example:

‘The first thing I would do is speak directly with my co-worker and ask them if there’s a reason they weren’t following the safety protocols. I would make sure they understood how important it is to ensure a safe work environment for everyone. If they continued to disregard the safety procedures, I would raise the issue with my supervisor.’

What would you do if a piece of equipment you’re using malfunctioned?

Riggers must be able to think on their feet and solve problems when they arise. What to look for in an answer:

  • ability to assess faulty equipment
  • problem-solving skills
  • ability to remain calm under pressure

Example:

‘Recently, I was working on a construction site and one of our cranes stopped working. I inspected the crane thoroughly and discovered the problem was due to a faulty hydraulic system. I asked one of the other crane operators to help lift the load while we repaired the hydraulic system. We managed to fix the issue quite quickly and were able to get back to work.’

Do you have any concerns about working at heights?

Riggers are often required to work at heights, and it is important that they are able to do so confidently and safely. What to look for in an answer:

  • experience working at heights
  • honesty about any concerns
  • strategies to overcome nervousness

Example:

‘When I first started working as a Rigger, I did get a little nervous about being up high. I think it’s good to have some nerves because it makes you more cautious. I’ve learnt to control my nerves by focusing on my work rather than the height.’

What do you think are the most important skills for a Rigger to have and how do you demonstrate these skills?

The aim of this question is to assess whether the candidate is aware of the skills that a Rigger requires and whether they possess these skills. What to look for in an answer:

  • communication skills
  • strong knowledge of rigging equipment
  • problem-solving skills

Example:

‘A Rigger must be a strong communicator with in-depth knowledge of equipment and good problem-solving skills. In my previous role, I communicated frequently with various different people, including co-workers, crane operators, safety personnel and supervisors. I always made sure that I communicated clearly and concisely, for example, when guiding crane operators to safely relocate loads. I developed excellent problem-solving skills in this role. I worked with a variety of different rigging equipment and had to think on my feet when various issues arose with the difference pieces of equipment.’

Can you describe how you inspect rigging gear before and after each use?

Inspecting equipment regularly is an important duty for a Rigger. This question will help you to determine how your candidate ensures the rigging gear they work with is safe to use at all times. What to look for in an answer:

  • attention to detail
  • ability to follow procedures
  • ability to work independently

Example:

‘Before the equipment is used, I check it to make sure it’s in good condition. Then, after each time the equipment is used, I inspect it to ensure it is free of damage and no parts are missing. When I’m working on a long project, I inspect my rigging gear twice a day—both at the beginning and end of the day.’

Why should we hire you for this role?

This question gives the applicant an opportunity to highlight why they are the best fit for the role and why they stand out against other Riggers. What to look for in an answer:

  • skills relevant to the role
  • a thoughtful reflection on their strengths
  • a point of difference from other candidates

Example:

‘I think that what sets me apart from other candidates is my keen eye for detail. I work methodically and thoroughly, which helps me to avoid making mistakes and means that I can be confident that all the equipment is safe and secure. I can recognise changes as they occur and take action accordingly, which helps to prevent issues from arising.’

What would you do if you noticed that the blueprint didn’t match the actual equipment you are meant to rig?

The purpose of this question is to ascertain the steps your candidate would take to address a problem they encounter in their work. What to look for in an answer:

  • problem-solving skills
  • ability to work under pressure
  • communication skills

Example:

‘Firstly, I would double-check that there is actually a discrepancy between the blueprint and the actual rigging equipment. If there was, I would raise this with my supervisor and ask if they would like me to continue working on the job or start again. If they wanted me to continue, I would try to do the job as safely as possible and still meet the client’s needs.’

What are some of the things you do to ensure your safety while rigging?

The aim of this question is to determine whether the applicant is aware of safety protocols and is prepared to take the necessary precautions when rigging. What to look for in an answer:

  • ability to adhere to safety protocols
  • awareness of potential hazards
  • willingness to take precautions

Example:

‘Firstly, I never rush a job. Working too hastily can cause mistakes and accidents. I always wear the necessary personal protective equipment, which can include a hard hat, steel cap boots and safety eyewear. Finally, I have a spotter watching out for any hazards or obstacles, and they point these out to me.’

Have you used any rigging software in the past?

Riggers use software programs to help them perform their work safely and more efficiently. What to look for in an answer:

  • computer literacy
  • experience using rigging software programs
  • awareness of the benefits of using rigging software

Example:

‘In my previous role, I used a smartphone and tablet application that helped me to calculate things, such as the working load limit, estimate the weight of loads and stay up to date with compliance standards and best practice. It also had a feature that helped me to brush up on crane hand and whistle signals. It was a great tool that helped me to work more efficiently.’
