What does a bar manager do?
A bar manager is responsible for the operations of a bar. They ensure beverages such as beer, wine and spirits are in stock and order more supplies when required. A bar manager is also involved in hiring staff and ensures they are skilled to make cocktails and other beverages that are offered to customers.
They also supervise operations by ensuring responsible service of alcohol compliance, as well as managing patrons if there are problems that arise from their alcohol consumption. Some bar managers may also work with chefs or food suppliers, if the bar serves food as well as drinks.

Strong candidates often demonstrate leadership, customer service and organisational skills, which may be important for success in this role. Adaptability and communication skills are also valuable competencies that set top candidates apart.

Bar manager experience requirements
A bar manager doesn’t have to have prior experience working in a bar, as other hospitality workers may have relevant skills. For example, a restaurant manager or café manager may hold skills that are transferable to your role.
Bartenders who do not have managerial experience may have the required beverage knowledge and skills you require for the role. They may have also been mentored or observed bar management techniques in their role.
A successful bar manager generally has an understanding of the challenges and requirements of working in a hospitality venue.
Bar manager education and training requirements
Staff who sell, offer for sale or serve liquor, as well as supervisors and security personnel working at licensed premises, must complete responsible service of alcohol (RSA) training under Australian state liquor licensing laws. As the duties of a bar manager may cover any or all of these aspects, it is best that candidates have this competency.
Otherwise, there are no other education and training requirements for this role. You may prefer that your successful bar manager candidate has completed further training, such as a vocational hospitality certificate or leadership short course, if you require high-level skills.
